ATLANTA -- Prominent black leaders and lawmakers called for a special session of the state legislature Monday to help free Genarlow Wilson.A letter was hand delivered to the governor's office Monday morning. The pastor of the church where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., once preached urged the governor to act now because the world is watching.Rev. Raphael Warnock, of Ebenezer Baptist Church, did not get a chance to meet with Gov. Sonny Perdue. The governor is on a two-week trade mission to Europe."We would encourage him to ask what Georgia is he promoting," Warnock asked. "Is this Genarlow's Georgia? Is this the Georgia for justice?"The letter urged the governor to call a special session to reconsider State Sen. Emmanual Jones' bill. The bill was written specifically for young men like Genarlow Wilson, who is serving 10 years in prison for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl when he was 17.The bill, which would make the 'Romeo and Juliet' provision of Georgia's sex offender law retroactive, did not get enough votes during the regular session.Sen. Jones said the bill might get enough votes now."We now have in our possession, an order from a superior court judge that says release this young man," Sen. Jones said. There has already been talk of lawmakers calling a special session. It would take a three-fifths vote in each chamber for that to happen. Some Republican leaders said they are angry that the governor crossed out their pet projects when he signed this year's budget. Some Democrats said they would vote for a special session if 'Genarlow's Bill' is on the agenda as well."We've got an inside game going on here, but we're gonna stay in the streets and make sure that justice is done for this young man and his family," said State Sen. Kasim Reed. Wilson's supporters are threatening to call for a boycott of the state of Georgia if things do not work out in their favor.
