ATLANTA -- A woman was surprised to learn that someone had stolen her identity and walked away with her tax refund check.Robin Johnson is a victim of identity theft and she said she found out about it when she tried to file her taxes.“I'm just an average person and I feel like this could happen to anyone,” Johnson said. “That's the scary part.”Johnson said her tax preparer told her that someone posing as her walked into the H&R Block on Monroe Drive in Atlanta and walked out with more than $5,000.
“She said, ‘I've never seen this before.’ She said you need to call the IRS and I did and they told me someone in fact did do their taxes,” Johnson said.Johnson said she went to the H&R Block where the check was cut and was told that someone did her taxes and provided identification.“I went in and I said, ‘I want to see a copy of my tax return,’” Johnson said. “And she said, ‘Can I ask you why’ and I told her someone came in here did their taxes in my name and I'm freaking out. So she pulled it up on the computer and said, ‘Yeah, someone did do their taxes and they provided us with a drivers license.’”It’s been a tough time for Johnson. She works at a dental office, but has been working just as hard to get her identity back.“And I'm just thinking do you make a copy of the driver’s license?” Johnson said. “And she said, ‘No, we don't.’ And I was like that's not right because where I go they make a copy of your driver’s license.”Johnson has decided to take action. She filed a police report, notified the three major credit bureaus and file a complaint with the IRS.“We do encourage taxpayers to still file a tax return,” said IRS spokesman Mark Green. “File a paper return and then contact our taxpayer advocate service. What we'll do is process the paper return and monitor the information and communicate with the taxpayer until this is resolved.”H&R Block is investigating the matter. Company officials said the security of Johnson’s personal information is of great concern.“That's just scary to me knowing that my information is out there and she's fabricated a W-2, fabricated a Georgia Driver's License and H&R Block has no way of knowing that I'm the correct Robin Johnson,” Johnson said.CBS 46 News contacted the Federal Trade Commission Friday and they said that under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, Johnson is entitled to the phony tax information that was filed at the H&R Block. The H&R Block manager said she wouldn’t give Johnson that information.
