Cleveland Indians (33-52) At Chicago White Sox (44-40), 2:05 P.m.
(Sports Network) - Two young lefties take the mound today at U.S. Cellular Field when the host Chicago White Sox face the Cleveland Indians in the finale of a three-game set between American League Central Division rivals. California-born 24-year-old David Huff starts for the Tribe while looking for a fifth win in his last six decisions and second win over the White Sox. The UCLA product topped Chicago, 8-4, on June 7 at U.S. Cellular, allowing four hits and three runs in five innings while walking three and striking out three. The win was the first of his big-league career and kick-started a stretch that's seen him go 4-1 with a no-decisions in six starts. Most recently, on July 3 against Oakland, Huff allowed eight hits and three runs in six innings of a 15-3 rout of the Athletics. For the White Sox, southpaw Clayton Richard makes his second start against the Indians in 10 days. A 25-year-old product of the University of Michigan, Richard downed Cleveland, 11-4, on June 30 in Ohio, allowing four hits and four runs in six innings. It was his fourth career appearance against the Indians in a big-league stay that's now seen him pitch in 36 games over two seasons, starting 19. He's 1-1 against them with a 6.61 earned run average in 16 1/3 innings. In his subsequent start, in July 5 in Kansas City, Richard lost a 6-3 decision to the Royals after allowing eight hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings. The White Sox won Tuesday's opener, 10-6, behind three home runs from Paul Konerko, then took game two, 5-1, on Wednesday when Jermaine Dye had three hits and drove in three runs. Alexei Ramirez and Scott Podsednik each scored twice for Chicago, which has won nine of its last 11 games. Chicago is second in the division, two games behind first-place Detroit, while Cleveland sits last, 13 1/2 games back. Jose Contreras (4-7) allowed six hits -- including a home run by Jhonny Peralta -- walked one and struck out a season- high nine batters in 6 1/3 innings of work. Fresh off a stint on the disabled list, Aaron Laffey (3-2) gave up four runs and seven hits in his six-inning start. Laffey hadn't pitched since May 22 because of a strained right oblique muscle. Chicago has won seven of its 11 matchups with the Indians.
