Paul Collins Broun III Charged With Drug Possession

POSTED: 5:59 am EDT April 16, 2009

The 18-year-old son of U.S. Rep. Paul Broun has been charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Athens-Clarke police said on Wednesday that Paul Collins Broun III was at a party early Saturday when officers responded to a complaint about noise. The police report said Broun smelled of alcohol, and a pill bottle containing a small amount of marijuana fell from his pocket.

The Athens Academy senior was also charged with underage possession of alcohol and violating the noise ordinance.

The Republican congressman, who was elected in 2007, issued a statement.

"This is a personal matter that our family will deal with privately. Our son has the love and support of his family as he takes responsibility for his actions. We appreciate everyone’s prayers during this personal family matter," the statement said.
