An arrest was made Friday in the shootings of a police officer and a Krystal restaurant manager.

Police arrested Marquet Donald, 22, a former Krystal employee. According to police, Donald was fired from the restaurant a week ago. Investigators said other employees recognized him. Donald's father brought him to police headquarters to turn himself in.

The incident began around 2 a.m. with a robbery at a fast food restaurant in Stockbridge. Police said they believe Donald entered the location through a door left propped open by an employee cleaning after store hours.

According to police, Donald, who investigators said was acting alone, confronted store manager Cheryl Alphabet, demanding that she open the safe. Once the safe was opened, police said, Donald ordered an employee to put money in a trash bag.

Police said Donald then instructed the employees to walk to the rear of the store, enter the cooler, and place their cell phones into the trash bag. None of the employees were hurt. The workers remained inside the cooler until police arrived.

The workers told police that while they were inside the cooler, they heard loud banging noises, including gunshots.

Alphabet, 49, of Conley, suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was brought to an Atlanta hospital where she was listed in critical condition.

Polcie said when they arrived, they saw a red Pontiac Sunfire, which they later learned belonged to the store manager, leaving the parking lot towards a Kroger grocery store located in the same shopping complex as the Krystal. Police said Donald drove to the rear of the Kroger where the driver left the car and ran on foot into a wooded area, polcie said.

Clayton County Police Chief Jeff Turner said police officer Matthew Whittonpursued the shooter on foot. During a struggle, the officer suffered a gunshot wound to his left wrist.

Whitton is recovering in the hospital. He is a six-year veteran of the Clayton County police department.
