ATLANTA -- Sneezing. Coughing. Itching. All common symptoms for allergy sufferers."The worst is red, itchy eyes where I just want to tear my eyes out," said Pam Campbell. She's allergic to cats.Maury Williams found out his allergies were triggered by food, specifically aspartame and beans."Within a half-hour after lunch, I'd start sneezing and wheezing," Williams said.Who knew he'd find relief at a chiropractor's office?Dr. Frederick Neal is one of a handful of Georgia doctors using the BAX-3000. According to the maker Bioveda, the device is not designed to diagnose or treat any specific conditions, rather it's an FDA cleared as stress reduction therapy."It's a brand new way of looking at treating the body and healing the body from the roots up," said Neal.Campbell believes the laser cured her allergy to cats."I couldn't even walk in and sit at the kitchen counter without doping up."First, a computer tests the body for allergic reactions to more than 35,000 substances. Each is assigned a particular frequency. Once an allergy is identified, the laser delivers the designated frequency to the body through acupuncture points."What the BAX-3000 does is reprogram the body so that the body no longer has an abnormal reaction," Neal said.According to Neal, the treatment is painless and there are virtually no side effects. He says some patients could see relief in as little as one or two treatments. More complex allergies can require up to 20 treatments."Now I can pet the cat, I can sit on the cat's chair, I can sit by the cat's litter box and I have no reaction at all," Campbell said.Overall, Neal says the reaction from patients has been amazing."We've seen people who have been house-ridden in the springtime, now out, reporting that they're mowing the lawn. They're jogging," he said.As for the cost, the initial consultation is free. Neal charges $125 for testing and $67 for each individual treatment. If you're allergic to many things, Neal may suggest a more involved program that includes a year's worth of treatments for $1,295.CBS Atlanta contacted the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America for its take on the BAX-3000. Director of Communications Mike Tringale said, "We encourage the development of safe, effective and innovative therapies that provide patients with a wide variety of diagnostic and treatment options. But, every patient should work with a board certified allergist to determine exactly which treatments are best for them."For more information on the BAX-3000, click here.
