DECATUR, Ga. -- Schelorrey Tubbs and Horace O’Kelly are coming up on their third wedding anniversary.“You remember when you first saw me?” said Tubbs.“Oh yeah. She was sweating me at the clinic,” said O’Kelly. They have much more in common than their love for each other. Both suffer from kidney disease. In fact, it’s what brought them together.“Doctor told me two things. In six months you’re going to have a transplant or you’re going to be on dialysis,” said O’Kelly.Tubbs was born with polyps on her kidneys. The couple met at the dialysis clinic and formed a special bond.“You don’t have anybody that you can talk to basically about how you’re feeling. We had something in common. We were friends,” said Tubbs. They’ve been waiting more than four years for kidney transplants. Dialysis is buying them time , a luxury they were spending too much of at the clinic. Not only were they required to wait long hours, but the process was physically and emotionally draining. These days, they have a lot more free time thanks to the NxStage portable dialysis system. The couple takes turns hooking each other to the machine to remove extra fluid and filter their blood. This way, they can treat each other in the comforts of their own home.“I sit there and watch my ESPN and I get to do what I want,” said Horace.Another perk is the machine can travel, which means the couple has a lot to look forward to, including the honeymoon they never had. O’Kelly plans to go back to work full-time.“I can go to work, do my eight hours, then come home and do my treatment,” said O’Kelly.Tubbs is also feeling like herself again.“My energy level has increased tremendously,” said Tubbs.Overall, this new technology has given the couple a new appreciation for life.“We don’t take anything for granted. We know that each day is a blessing for us,” said O’Kelly. The couple is among the more than 20 million Americans suffering with chronic kidney disease. If you’d like more information on the at-home dialysis system, visit Renal Care Partners’ website at www.dialysisfreedom.com.
