Cornelia Kornegay Will Likely Face Felony Charge, Peach County Sheriff Says

FORT VALLEY, Ga. -- Peach County authorities said a newborn girl was found in the toilet of a jail cell.According to Sheriff Terry Deese, Cornelia Kornegay, 25, of Roberta, had the infant in a holding cell Wednesday morning. Deese told Macon.com that Kornegay told jailers matter-of-factly, "My baby's in the toilet."Deese said deputies found the infant upside down submerged in water, but the newborn survived. He said jailers were unaware that Kornegay was pregnant. Deese also told Macon.com that a nurse who had checked Kornegay out Tuesday night couldn't tell that Kornegay was pregnant.According to Deese, Kornegay will likely face a charge of felony cruelty to children and other offenses. She was already being held at the facility for violating probation.Deese said the infant, a 7-pound, 6-ounce girl, was taken to the hospital and was listed in good condition.Fort Valley is 103 miles south of Atlanta.
