ATLANTA -- A southwest Atlanta homeowner was shot early Thursday morning while trying to protect his family.

Police said the man and his wife heard a noise outside their home on Westmont Road just after midnight.

According to investigators, the man grabbed his gun and went outside, where he encountered the robber.

The homeowner was shot in the shoulder and the ear, police said.

Officers have not made any arrests.
