A young child was credited for helping save his family during an apartment fire in Clarkston Friday morning.

The fire began in the kitchen of one unit at the Indian Valley apartments on Northern Avenue around 1:30 a.m., according to DeKalb County firefighters.

According to investigators, the child was awakened by smoke.

"The occupant stated that his child was crying and that's what woke him up, and then he noticed the smoke, and he got his family out," said DeKalb Fire Battalion Chief Bennie Joe Page.

Everyone made it out safely.

A total of 22 people, 14 adults and eight children, were displaced by the fire.

No one was hurt.

Firefighters are looking for the cause.
