The incident began around 2 p.m. when police said the gunman robbed a Citgo convenience store on Moreland Avenue. Afterwards, according to investigators, the robber ran into some woods with another man, who had been waiting outside.

Minutes later, Twan and his handler found the men, who fired at the officers. Twan was hit in the face.

The man police police believe shot Twan ran across Interstate 285 near Jonesboro Road, where he was met by several police officers. The second man escaped.

According to police, Twan almost died, but an emergency surgery saved his life. Fellow police officers and police dogs were at the animal hospital in Sandy Springs to support Twan, who has been with DeKalb County police for two years.
