Georgia's Stafford, Moreno To Enter NFL Draft

POSTED: 3:25 pm EST January 7, 2009

(Sports Network) - Georgia junior quarterback Matthew Stafford and sophomore tailback Knowshon Moreno both announced Wednesday they will be entering the NFL Draft.

The announcement is a huge setback for the Bulldogs, since Stafford and Moreno were the Bulldogs' best offensive players last season.

Projected as a possible top pick in the draft, Stafford led the Southeastern Conference in passing while Moreno paced the league in rushing.

"It was a tough decision for me, but I have decided to enter the NFL Draft," said Stafford. "I had an outstanding time here at Georgia. The way the coaches treat you and the people, make it feel like home."

The 6-3, 235-pound Stafford set a school record with 25 passing touchdowns this past year. He threw for 3,459 yards, the second-highest total in Georgia history, this past season and has 7,731 yards with 51 TDs and 33 interceptions in three seasons as Georgias starting quarterback. He was named MVP of the Capital One Bowl last week, throwing three touchdown passes in the final 18 minutes of Georgia's 24-12 victory over Michigan State. Stafford finished the game with 250 passing yards to go along with the three TDs.

Moreno, a redshirt sophomore, had 1,400 yards rushing and 18 TDs this past year, becoming the first Georgia player since Herschel Walker in 1982 to rush for more than 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. In two seasons as the Bulldogs featured tailback, he has 2,734 yards.

"The toughest part will be leaving my teammates," said Moreno. "I know they will make Georgia nation proud."

The 21-year-old Moreno and Ohio State's Chris "Beanie" Wells have been projected as the top two running backs in the draft. Wells, a junior, has not yet announced his intentions. All underclassmen have until January 15 to submit their names for the draft.
