SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Georgia Ports Authority officials say a record 2.4 million tons of cargo moved through the state's ports in April. Officials say April's record is an increase of more than 100,000 tons over the same time period last year.

ATLANTA (AP) - The Department of Veterans Affairs has appointed Leslie B. Wiggins as the new director of the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Department spokesman Greg Kendall says Wiggins will oversee delivery of health care services to more than 89,000 veterans and a staff of more than 2,900 workers.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Several east Georgia Republicans are weighing a possible challenge to Democratic U.S. Rep. John Barrow next year. The Augusta congressman won a fifth-term last fall even after his 12th District seat was redrawn to give Republicans a daunting advantage.

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. (AP) - Developers are set to start construction on a new convention hotel for Jekyll Island after long delays that largely resulted from difficulties getting a bank loan for the $41 million project. The 200-room hotel is considered a key piece for turning around around years of sagging tourism and convention business in the region.
